How to Read: Plot

Plot—chronology

Realistic fiction tends to use a straightforward chronology (timeline), from past to present.

Faulkner's story uses a non-conventional timeline, starting—and ending—with Emily's death.

The next slide shows 2 timelines: events in the story as they occur in time and the same events in the order they're told to us.
